An analysis of images contained in the L’Uso della Squadra Mobile Treaty by Ottavio Fabri

Resumo: We analyzed three imagery out of the Ottavio Fabri's (1544-1612) italian treaty L'Uso della squadra mobile published in 1615. The objective that guided the investigation was to seek answers to the following questions: What is represented in these images? How is such representation made? Why are the images so presented? The selected images were the movable square and the illustrations referring to proposals IV and IX. To analyze them, we used Erwin Panosfky's methodology from three levels of approach: pre-iconographic description, iconographic description and iconological interpretation. The chosen images are representative of reality, with details minutiae; they have a clear intention to portray each proposed situation and have different meanings: the movable square is the constructive key to the problems; and the images that illustrate the problems signify the mathematical knowledge available at the time, as well as expressing a Renaissance experience.

Por que as imagens são assim apresentadas? As imagens selecionadas foram o esquadro móvel e as ilustrações referentes às propostas IV e IX. Para analisá-las, recorremos à metodologia de Erwin Panosfky a partir de três níveis de abordagem: descrição pré-iconográfica, descrição iconográfica e interpretação iconológica.
