The toponymization of generic geographical terms: names of Brazilian municipalities

Resumo: The general objective of this study is to present an analysis of the names of municipalities formed from a common lexical item considered a generic geographic term related to a physical or human accident. The examined corpus was composed of 810 names extracted from the list of toponyms of municipalities made available by IBGE. The theoretical and methodological reflections that underlie the work are, especially, those of Dauzat (1947), Dick (1990a, 1990b) and Trapero (1995). As an example of the results obtained, we mention the following: this type of nomination is relatively evenly distributed throughout Brazil, being slightly more frequent in the North Region; the generic geographic terms that most result in toponyms are river, field and lagoon (among the physical accidents); porto, vila and jardim (among the human accidents). These generic terms compose toponyms such as: Rio de Janeiro, Campo Largo, Lagoa da Canoa, Porto Alegre, Vila Rica, Jardim do Mulato.

El corpus examinado está compuesto por 810 nombres extraídos de la lista de topónimos de los municipios puesta a disposición por el IBGE. Las reflexiones teóricas y metodológicas que subyacen al trabajo son, especialmente, las de Dauzat (1947), Dick (1990a, 1990b) y Trapero (1995). Como ejemplo de los resultados obtenidos, mencionamos los siguientes: este tipo de nominación se distribuye de forma relativamente uniforme en todo Brasil, siendo ligeramente más frecuente en la Región Norte; los términos geográficos genéricos que más resultan en los topónimos son rio, campo y lagoa (entre los accidentes físicos); porto, vila y jardim (entre los accidentes humanos). Estos términos genéricos componen topónimos como: Rio de Janeiro, Campo Largo, Lagoa da Canoa, Porto Alegre, Vila Rica, Jardim do Mulato.O estudo tem como objetivo geral apresentar uma análise dos nomes dos municípios formados a partir de um item lexical comum considerado termo geográfico genérico relativo a acidente físico ou humano. O corpus examinado foi composto de 810 nomes extraídos da lista de topônimos de municípios disponibilizada pelo IBGE. As reflexões teórico-metodológicas que fundamentam o trabalho são, especialmente, as de Dauzat (1947), Dick (1990a, 1990b) e Trapero (1995). Como exemplo de resultados obtidos, citam-se os seguintes: esse tipo de nomeação está distribuído de forma, relativamente, equilibrada pelo Brasil, sendo um pouco mais frequente na Região Norte; os termos genéricos geográficos que mais resultam em topônimos são rio, campo e lagoa (dentre os de acidentes físicos); porto, vila e jardim (dentre os de acidentes humanos).
