Metadiscursive resources in thesis abstracts: the style in specialized texts

Resumo: Since academic writing seeks to create an effect of impersonality, we have studied this style in academic texts, specifically in abstracts of thesis. To be precise, we have investigated how researchers choose to represent themselves on their texts. In order to do that, we have made a descriptive and qualitative analysis of two thesis abstracts from Computing Science, two from Applied Linguistics and two from Medicine - a total of six thesis abstracts - making use of stance interactional metadiscourse categories to identify subjective style in the three areas. The results show that the objectivity of specialized texts presents itself in different levels and forms.

Más concretamente, investigamos cómo los investigadores eligen representarse a sí mismos en sus textos. Para esto, realizamos un análisis descriptivo y cualitativo de dos resúmenes de tesis en las áreas de Ciencias de la Computación, dos en Lingüística Aplicada y dos en Medicina, totalizando seis, utilizando las categorías del metadiscurso interactivo de posicionamiento como evidencia del estilo subjetivo en las áreas presentadas. Como resultado, identificamos que la presunta objetividad de los textos especializados viene en diferentes niveles y modos.Uma vez que a escrita acadêmica busca criar o efeito de impessoalidade, estudamos o estilo em textos especializados, especificamente em resumos de tese acadêmica. Mais precisamente, investigamos como os pesquisadores escolhem se representar em seus textos. Para isso, realizamos uma análise descritiva e qualitativa de dois resumos de teses das áreas de Ciência da Computação, dois da Linguística Aplicada e dois da Medicina – totalizando seis, portanto – usando as categorias do metadiscurso interacional de posicionamento como evidenciadores do estilo subjetivo nas áreas apresentadas.
