The dynamics of Contact Portuguese of Guarani from Espírito Santo state: effect of social variables in the 3rd plural person verbal agreement

Resumo: This article deals with the dynamics of the Contact Portuguese spoken by the Guarani from the state of Espirito Santo, taking into consideration the effect of social variables in constraining the variable use of the 3rd person’s verbal agreement. The study is based on the theoretical assumption of Variationist Sociolinguistics regarding the acquisition of linguistic variation by L2 speakers (Howard et al., 2013) and methodological aspects of the sample organization, data collection, and analysis. The results showed that the dynamics of variation of the Contact Portuguese spoken by Guarani is strongly related to social aspects, specifically regarding the roles of men and women in the social organization of Guarani and their consequences in the contact with Brazilian Portuguese.

Los resultados mostraron que la dinámica de variación del portugués de contacto hablado por los Guaraní es fuertemente relacionada a aspectos sociales, específicamente con respecto a los papeles de hombres y mujeres en la organización social de los Guaraní y sus consecuencias en el contacto con el portugués brasileño.Este artigo trata da dinâmica do português de contato falado pelos Guarani do Espírito Santo,  considerando o efeito das variáveis sociais que atuam no condicionamento do uso variável da concordância verbal de 3ª pessoa do plural. O estudo se baseia nos pressupostos teóricos da Sociolinguística Variacionista no que diz respeito à aquisição da variação linguística por falantes de L2 (Howard et al., 2013) e aspectos metodológicos de organização da amostra, coleta e análise dos dados.
