The Sociolinguistic configuration of Southern Bahia in a transnational perspective (1746-1820)

Resumo: : The text in question seeks to outline the sociolinguistic scenario of the southern region of Bahia, which would have been characterized by multilingualism, a consequence of the region's economic stagnation, a fact that would have generated less conflicts between Portuguese and Indians, preserving the speakers of local languages. The change in this scenario would occur from the 1820s onwards, with the growth of the cocoa plantation, which began in the region in 1746. In parallel with this scenario, we have another different one: the foundation of three Swiss-German colonies, which would have presented a context of irregular linguistic transmission of L2 Portuguese from Germans and Swiss to enslaved Africans. And, running through the entire text, we argue that the understanding of these differentiated sociolinguistic situations in the same region was possible because we adopted a broad view that considered the transnational historical relations within which the south of Bahia was immersed, because, without this, it would not be possible to understand how these sociolinguistic situations were triggered.

El cambio de este escenario se daría a partir de la década de 1820, con el crecimiento de la plantación de cacao, que se inició en la región en 1746. Paralelamente a este escenario, tenemos otro diferente: la fundación de tres colonias suizo-alemanas, que habría presentado un contexto de transmisión lingüística irregular del portugués L2 de alemanes y suizos a los africanos políglotas esclavizados. Y, recorriendo todo el texto, argumentamos que la comprensión de estas situaciones sociolingüísticas diferenciadas en una misma región fue posible porque adoptamos una visión amplia que consideró las relaciones históricas transnacionales en las que estaba inmerso el sur de Bahía, ya que, sin eso, no sería posible comprender cómo se desencadenaron estas situaciones sociolingüísticas.O texto em pauta procura delinear o cenário sociolinguístico da região sul da Bahia, que teria se caracterizado pelo multilinguismo, consequência da estagnação econômica da região, fato que teria gerado menos conflitos entre portugueses e índios, preservando os falantes das línguas locais. A alteração nesse quadro ocorreria a partir da década de 1820, com o crescimento da lavoura cacaueira, iniciada na região em 1746. Paralelamente a esse cenário, temos outro distinto: a fundação de três colônias suíço-alemãs, que teriam apresentado um contexto de transmissão linguística irregular do português L2 de alemães e suíços a africanos aloglotas escravizados.
