Dispute for Modernization: Strategies, and Arguments of the Consejo Estudiantil Universitario against the Plan of Rector Jorge Carpizo in México, 1986-1987

This article analyzes the opposition led by the Consejo Estudiantil Universitario (CEU) against the project of the rector Jorge Carpizo that proposed normative modifications that affected the access and permanence of the students of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The objective is to identify the main repertoires of collective action and arguments that the students deployed to dispute the modernizing project that coincided with the restrictive budgetary policies of the federal government and the proposals of international higher education organizations in the West. The above is reconstructed from a historical perspective from the materials produced by the student movement, archival documents, hemerography and the transcription of the public dialogue that they had with the university authorities. This text maintains that the CEU built novel repertoires of action anchored in the negotiation that showed them as non-radical agents of change and that the axes of their discourse were articulated around an a democratic ideal.
