Knowledge acquisition for ontologies construction: towards a methodological list of topics in the domain of hematology

Obtaining specialized knowledge from a specific domain is a real challenge in diverse scientific fields. Within fields related to Life Sciences particularly, the comprehensive and complex terminology may result in different interpretations for the same term. This sort of problem has been faced for years within the Information Science field. The general goal of this study is to propose alternatives to reduce the gap between what experts really know and what is recorded as their knowledge. In order to do this, we propose a methodology for knowledge elicitation in the specialized field of study of HTLV virus and the diseases the virus causes in human beings, namely, myelopathy associated to HTLV virus. The empirical data was obtained from researchers in the HTLV Research Group of the Hemominas Foundation (GIPH), as well as their scientific work. A noticeable contribution from this work is the proposed methodology, which eventually made possible the selection of candidate terms to be used in an ontology under construction.
