Sporting legacies of sports mega-events: a review of the available literature

Summary: The goal of this paper is to present a literature review about sport legacies of sports mega-events. We used the following key-words and their equivalents in Portuguese:  “sport mega-events”, “legacy”, “sport legacy”. We present the main empirical academic studies available, dedicating especial attention to “London 2012”. We also synthetize recommendations for the development of positive sport legacies to future host cities/countries. We conclude that the nature of research on this theme is extremely complex and that there isn´t enough scientific evidence showing a correlation between the realization of mega-events and the involvement of people with sports and physical activity.

Utilizamos las siguientes palabras clave y sus correspondientes en la lengua inglesa: megaevento deportivo; legado; legado deportivo. Presentamos los principales estudios disponibles, dedicando especial atención al caso Londres 2012. También sintetizamos recomendaciones referentes a la construcción de legados deportivos positivos, para futuras ciudades/países sede. Concluimos que investigaciones sobre la temática son de naturaleza extremamente compleja, y que no existen evidencias científicas suficientes comprobando la existencia de una correlación entre la realización de estos eventos y el enredamiento de la populación con actividades físicas y deportivas.    O objetivo deste trabalho éapresentar um levantamento da literatura sobre legados esportivos de megaeventosesportivos.
