The role of values in agroecological research

Resumo: Data from the Agricultural Census reveal that the knowledge of modern agricultural science is not used by a significant portion of Brazilian farmers. This sector is, notwithstanding, responsible for the development of complex systems of knowledge of nature, management of ecosystems and food production. Such distance goes beyond the simple matter of barriers to the adoption of new technologies, placing itself in the field of ethical and social values in which scientific research is mostly developed. This article draws on Hugh Lacey’s model of the interaction between scientific activities and values (M-CV) to argue that agroecological research, by embedding itself in a universe of values different from that of the commercially oriented science, contributes to strengthen sectors that do not have their perspectives prioritized by the dominant agricultural science.

Este setor é, entretanto, responsável pelo desenvolvimento de complexos sistemas de conhecimento da natureza, da gestão dos ecossistemas e da produção de alimentos. Tal distanciamento vai além da simples questão de barreiras à adoção de novas tecnologias, situando-se no campo dos valores éticos e sociais nos quais a pesquisa científica é majoritariamente desenvolvida.
