Resumo: In this article we provide a condensed review of literature on developmental dyslexia. Starting with the historical background to this language-based reading disorder, we discuss four key components that are crucial for a valid and operational definition of developmental dyslexia. We then present the major theoretical explanations of developmental dyslexia in order to gain a better understanding of the causes of this reading disorder. These causal explanations are addressed in the context of Morton and Frith’s (1995) model. Four major theories of developmental dyslexia are discussed: the phonological deficit theory, the double-deficit theory, the magnocellular theory, and the cerebellar theory. The last section of this review addresses the model of reading development proposed by Frith (1986). Understanding the developmental progression of children’s abilities in reading is crucial in order to detect in which phase of this progression a breakdown attributed to dyslexia occurs.

Quatro principais teorias são discutidas: a teoria do déficit fonológico, a teoria do déficit duplo, a teoria magnocelular e a teoria cerebelar. A última seção desta revisão trata do modelo de desenvolvimento da leitura proposto por Frith (1986). O conhecimento sobre o curso do desenvolvimento das habilidades de leitura na população infantil é essencial para determinar a fase em queuma ruptura da progressão atribuída à dislexia ocorre.UFSC2019-10-07info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/desterro/article/view/2175-8026.2019v72n3p24910.5007/2175-8026.2019v72n3p249Ilha do Desterro A Journal of English Language, Literatures in English and Cultural Studies; Vol. 72 No. 3 (2019): Psycholinguistics: implications for the classroom; 249-270Ilha do Desterro A Journal of English Language, Literatures in English and Cultural Studies; v. 72 n. 3 (2019): Psycholinguistics: implications for the classroom; 249-2702175-80260101-4846reponame:Ilha do Desterroinstname:Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)instacron:UFSCenghttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/desterro/article/view/2175-8026.2019v72n3p249/40988Copyright (c) 2019 Anna Belavina Kuerten, Mailce Borges Mota, Katrien Segaertinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessKuerten, Anna BelavinaMota, Mailce BorgesSegaert, Katrien2019-12-10T11:56:59Zoai:periodicos.ufsc.br:article/67728Revistahttp://www.periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/desterroPUBhttps://periodicos.ufsc.br/index.php/desterro/oaiilha@cce.ufsc.br||corseuil@cce.ufsc.br||ilhadodesterro@gmail.com2175-80260101-4846opendoar:2019-12-10T11:56:59Ilha do Desterro - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)false
