Hoje, é falada, principalmente, no Brasil, no noroeste do estado do Amazonas, sobretudo no município de São Gabriel da Cachoeira, onde é uma língua cooficial, ao lado do Português e de outras duas línguas indígenas o Baníwa e o Tukano. Os dados linguísticos foram coletados junto a falantes da língua com origem étnica distinta (Werekena, Baré e Baníwa) em sessões de elicitação. As interrogativas WH representam um tema clássico no âmbito da teoria gerativa e, a despeito dos muitos estudos já produzidos, continuam permitindo rediscussões teóricas, o que, em si, é suficiente para se justificar um estudo dessa temática. Considerando-se os resultados encontrados no Nheengatu contemporâneo, concluiu-se que há duas formas básicas para as interrogativas WH em Nheengatu: awa, que semanticamente representa o traço [+ humano] e maã, que representa [- humano]. Na análise que aqui se propõe, maã combina-se com posposições para indicar lugar (onde, de onde, para onde, por onde, etc.), tempo, quantidade e modo. Tanto awa quanto maã e suas respectivas combinações costumam coocorrer com taa, que, neste trabalho, será tratada como partícula/clítico de interrogação (abreviadamente Q). Discute-se, ainda, a possibilidade de análise de taa como um complementizador (COMP), segundo a proposta de Faria (2004), ou como núcleo de FocP, conforme Gomes (2007), ambos referindo-se à partícula interrogativa te, do Kayabi, uma língua da família Tupi-Guarani, a exemplo do Nheengatu.Abstract: This dissertation provides an account of WH clauses in Nheengatu, focusing on WH questions. In the available literature, Nheengatu is also known as Língua Geral Amazônica (General Amazonian Language). Nowadays, it is mostly spoken in the northwestern part of the Brazilian State of Amazonas, particularly in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, where it has co-official status alongside Portuguese and two other indigenous languages - Baniwa and Tukano. The linguistic data were obtained from speakers from different ethnic backgrounds (Werekena, Baré, and Baniwa) in elicitation sessions. WH questions constitute a classical theme within generative theory and, despite a number of studies, remain open to theoretical reappraisals, which, by itself, is enough to justify a study on this topic. Considering the results found in contemporary Nheengatu, it was concluded that there are two basic morphemes with which WH questions in Nheengatu can be formed: awa, which semantically represents the feature [+ human], and maã, which represents [-human]. In the analysis proposed here, maã is combined with postpositions to indicate place (where, from where, to where, by where, etc.), time, quantity, and manner. Both awa and maã - in their several combinations - often co-occur with taa, which, in the present work, will be treated as a question particle/clitic (abbreviated as Q).
