Resumo: The article intends to give visibility to the results of the research carried out in the Social Work course of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), which aimed to outline the Socioeconomic characterization of students and Social Work. In addition, the trajectory of the constitution of the course in the University was traced. The methodology was quantitative-qualitative and consisted of a questionnaire to the total number of undergraduate students in Social Work in the first half of 2017 and three interviews with the founders of the course at UFSM, besides bibliographic review. The final considerations suggest an approximation to the general profile of the professional category
