Conflict or encounter of generations? Management profile and team work between the generations baby boomer, X and Y

Resumo: The article aims to understand the main differences and similarities of the management profile among baby boomer, generation X and generation Y managers and the challenges for teamwork in a military organization in Rio Grande do Sul (RS). This is a qualitative and exploratory research with Brazilian Army graduates who perform a management role and belong to the aforementioned generations. As data collection techniques, semi-structured interviews and discussion groups were carried out. As a result, it is highlighted that Generation Y managers have a management profile focused on participative leadership, while the other generations focus on hierarchy and discipline. Another factor worth mentioning is the preference that all interviewed soldiers give to teamwork, regardless of the generation they belong to, a fact that can be justified by the nature of military work, which encourages teamwork from basic training.

Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa e exploratória com militares graduados do Exército Brasileiro que desempenham função de gestão e que pertencem às gerações supracitadas. Como técnicas de coleta de dados, foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas e grupo de discussão. Como resultado, destaca-se que os gestores da geração Y apresentam um perfil de gestão voltado para a liderança participativa, enquanto as demais gerações concentram seu foco na hierarquia e disciplina.
