Resumo: The Brazil of the first half of the 19th century needed arms to work on the vast land. In Germany, at the same time, many needy people were in pursuit of new opportunities to work, hoping for a piece of land to belong them. Many German families came to Brazil and worked in small pieces of land – of their own. However, the field modernization process and the monocultures, mainly of soybeans, led a lot of those people to lose again their land and to begin a new migration process. The violent loss and the violence that loss can cause are the subject in the book Quem faz gemer a terra (transl. Who makes earth groan), from the Brazilian writer Charles Kiefer.
