Resumo: The meaning of work is its value to the subject's eyes and the representation that it is done. It is consistency between them, driven by the expectations and values, which directs actions. It is understood that understand this meaning assigned by the university lecturer is one of the keys to building a quality education, able to train individuals to meet their own needs and those of your country. This study aimed to analyze the meaning of the work of higher education professors in Santa Maria - RS, ensuring there is influence on the nature of the institution - public and private. Therefore, we carried out a quantitative-qualitative research, through which it was realized that the attribution of meaning to work for these professors is driven by factors such as recognition, autonomy, respect, feeling of belonging, social contribution. O interest in the work that gives pleasure and personal satisfaction was considered important, as well as a work that fosters social and human relations. Overall, this study showed the centrality of work in people's lives, which highlighted the importance of labor activity in the lives of professors surveyed in relation to time organization, which is dedicated much to teaching. In short, we realized the occurrence of a greater number of similarities between the perceptions of professores of both institutions as the two constructs analyzed in this study than disparities.

É a coerência entre ambos, impulsionada pelas expectativas e valores, que direciona ações. Entende-se que compreender tal sentido atribuído pelo docente universitário é uma das chaves para a construção de uma educação de qualidade, capaz de formar indivíduos que atendam às suas próprias necessidades, bem como as do seu país. O presente estudo objetivou analisar o sentido do trabalho dos docentes de nível superior em Santa Maria – RS, verificando se existe influência quanto à natureza da instituição – pública e privada. Para tanto realizou-se uma pesquisa de cunho quantitativo-qualitativo, por meio da qual percebeu-se que a atribuição de sentido ao trabalho para estes docentes é impulsionada por fatores como reconhecimento, autonomia, respeito, sentimento de pertencimento, contribuição social, entre outros aspectos.O interesse pelo trabalho que proporciona prazer e satisfação pessoal foi considerado importante, assim como um trabalho que favoreça as relações sociais e humanas. De maneira geral, este estudo apontou a centralidade do trabalho na vida das pessoas, sendo evidenciada a importância da atividade laboral na vida dos docentes pesquisados em relação à organização do tempo, que é dedicado boa parte à docência.
