The dissertation elaborated comprehended the relations between three families of family farmers in the dairy production, bringing competences of the Recognition theory. These analyzes were allied with agroecological conceptions based on the idea of Voisin Rational Grazing, a technology in common between families and guided by the EMATER extensionist. The methodology used was a qualitative approach, outlining a case study inside the city of Santa Maria / RS, using field diaries, photographic records and video. The objective was initially to categorize the families according to their self- images, emphasizing the sustainability of the properties; From these categories, there was a subjective existence of recognition between the families and the extensionist, who acts as a mediator of relations within the scope of rural extension. From this analysis, we verify the existence of subjective aspects that transcend the practical knowledge: both the extensionist, who elaborates more scientific knowledge, and the farms themselves, who are guided by knowledge also coming from experience. In this logic, we understand that farmers’ daily decisions and motivations are not only guided by technical and economic aspects, but also denote abstract knowledge that emerges from experience and experience in society and with their peers.
