Resumo: The purpose of this article is to reflect on the uses of popular culture in the teaching of local history in the city of Porangatu, Goiás. From a quantitative research carried out in the city schools, we perceive that the students reproduce the local legend to explain their foundation, neglecting the elements that are present in their daily lives. In this sense, we strive to demonstrate the problems arising from this reproduction: a cover-up of history and ignorance of the socio-economic tensions built up in the formation process of the city. We hope to broaden the debates on the use of historical heritage in History Teaching and the problems of its appropriation indiscriminately.

Partindo de uma pesquisa quantitativa realizada nas escolas da cidade, percebemos que os alunos reproduzem a lenda local para explicar sua fundação, negligenciando os elementos históricos que estão presentes em seus cotidianos.  Nesse sentido, esforçamo-nos em demonstrar os problemas decorrentes dessa reprodução: encobrimento da História e o desconhecimento das tensões socioeconômicas construídas no processo de formação da cidade.
