Resumo: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the levels and to identify the possible generators of anxiety in university students from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) in the semester. A structured questionnaire was used and, as instruments for assessing anxiety levels, the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory (IDATE) were used. The analysis of variance, frequency analyzes and comparisons of variables were performed (Chi-Square test). From a total of 533 students interviewed, the three most cited situations as possible triggers of anxiety were: tests and seminars (98 citations); Expectation for / at the end of the course (87 citations); and, being faced with many tasks (50 citations). Women were more interested in undergoing psychological counseling than men (72.1% and 58.5%, respectively). Women, when compared with men, had higher levels of BAI - Serious anxiety (30.3% and 16.5%, respectively); and, Anxiety Trait - High Symptomatology (47.4% and 35.0%, respectively).
