Translation Studies in Brazil: ABRAPT and the Brazilian Translators’ Forum

Translation Studies emerged as a discipline in the 1950s. In the Brazilian context, authors indicate the 1980s as a period of identity construction of the discipline, which culminated in the institutionalization of translation research in the following decades. In this article, a historical record of the foundation and activities of the Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Tradução – ABRAPT (Brazilian Association of Translation Researchers) was made drawing on bibliographic survey, documents and information obtained from interviews with the main researchers involved with the association. Based on Frota (2007), Vasconcellos (2013), Rodrigues (2013) and Milton (2015), who approached translation studies in Brazil from a historical perspective, the state of the art of translation research in Brazil in the 1980s and 1990s was investigated and a historical record of one of the most prominent forums on translation research – the Encontro Nacional de Tradutores (Brazilian Translators' Forum) – was made. The acknowledgment that there are areas in translation historiography that weren’t well explored in the Brazilian context yet (MILTON and MARTINS, 2010), and that there is lack of bibliography and documents on ABRAPT and other forums led to the construction of this article that aims at contributing to the preservation of the history of the association and to the mapping of Translation Studies in Brazil.
