Repercussions of data collection methods on the perception of phonetic variation

This article investigates the effects of data collection methodology on the phonetic perception of coda [s] and [ʃ] in Brazilian Portuguese. To do so, 30 Florianopolitan speakers performed a similarity rating test. The results indicated that the place of origin of speakers’ parents does not affect the perception of the relative degree of similarity between the variable alveolar and post-alveolar fricatives. This result suggests that the data collection methodology carried out under the assumption of Sociolinguistics – which predicts that informants and their parents must have been born and raised in the same place, i. e., they must share the same linguistic variety – may be expanded in terms of contemplating informants whose parents are speakers of other dialectal varieties. It is understood that this methodological approach is relevant to the research on the perception of phonetic variation since it allows a closer approximation of the linguistic reality of the urban centers, which is marked by the great population mobility.
