Identity studies and critical language teacher education: decolonizing practices and facing challenges

Resumo: In this article, we propose and discuss the insertion of identity studies in language teacher education curriculum. We start from an understanding of language as social practice and identities as construction (BLOMMAERT, 2005; HALL, 2014; NORTON; TOOHEY, 2001). This qualitative and interpretative research (MOITA LOPES, 1994), carried out with language teachers, discusses how identity studies, in a poststructuralist perspective, may be relevant to decolonize language teaching practices and teacher education. We have shown in our discussions that identity studies in teacher education open up space for denaturalizing identities, questioning and decolonizing textbook discourses, and understanding language teaching as a possibility for critical citizenship. However, challenges arose in relation to the complexity of contemporary issues, the time in the classroom and students’ language levels.

Partimos de uma compreensão de linguagem como prática social e identidades como construção (BLOMMAERT, 2005; HALL, 2014; NORTON; TOOHEY, 2001). Esta pesquisa qualitativa e interpretativista (MOITA LOPES, 1994), feita com professores/as em formação, discute como os estudos identitários, em uma perspectiva pós-estruturalista, podem ser relevantes para decolonizar práticas de ensino de línguas e de formação docente. Mostramos, em nossas discussões, que os estudos identitários na formação docente abrem espaço para desnaturalizar identidades, questionar e decolonizar discursos dos livros didáticos e para entender o ensino de línguas como uma possibilidade de formação cidadã crítica.
