Resumo: This paper discusses the results of the analysis of speech data from Carnaíba, a city located in Pernambuco inland, focusing in the variation regarding the licensing of a definite article before a prenominal possessive pronoun and before proper nouns. The theoretical-methodological assumptions that guided the analysis is based on the framework of the Sociolinguistic (variation theory) and  it is centered on the results in which the variable syntactic function of the nominal phrase was controlled, considering that this variable allowed to observe a difference in the frequency of licensing of articles in the two different contexts analyzed here. The collected data points to a trend of non license of the definite article before pro-per nouns and prenominal possessives, which differs from the use found in relation to other communities, more specifically, those located more to the Southeast and South of the country.

Os pressupostos teórico-metodológicos que nortearam a análise advêm do quadro da sociolinguística variacionista e a discussão está centrada nos resultados em que foi controlada a variável função sintática do sintagma nominal, tendo em vista que essa variável permitiu observar uma diferença na frequência de licenciamento de arti-gos nos dois diferentes contextos aqui analisados.
