Resumo: This paper aims to discuss how the concept of emancipation is meant by social educators, when it seems contradictory to think of working the emancipation and autonomy of the community, at a time when the economic system imposes individuality. It is a qualitative research that, through documentary analysis and semistructured interviews, it has made it possible to identify whether for professionals who carry out educational activities in social practices if their activities are emancipatory. The actions of these professionals were based on educational activities developed in the community with adolescents, youth and adults, users of social assistance policy, and had as their proposal to emancipate these subjects for the exercise of citizenship. However, in the analysis, it was shown that social educators were alienated from the capitalist system, reproducing the formation of submissive and uncritical individuals, considering the logic of the world of capital. In the final considerations the need to create opportunities and possibilities for social educators to revise their conceptions is highlighted.
