Resumo: This study aimed to reflect on social education and its repercussions, specifically at a non-governmental institution located in the peripheral region of Porto Alegre, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. This is a qualitative and exploratory study. Questionnaires with multiple choice and discursive questions were applied to thirty-two social educators. The data indicate that the majority of educators are female, aged between 51-70 years, with incomplete elementary education and have some occupation to support themselves. The activity in which there is a greater number of social educators involved is the craftsmanship. They are volunteers, performing the activity during one and four hours a week. Although the field of non-formal education is permeated by situations described as difficult ones, related to the social vulnerability of users, the role that social educators perform in the institution has made possible the necessary support for some changes and transformation processes.
