Resumo: This paper aims to describe how the coffee break served during a university research and extension project, carried out in a public school in the Minas Gerais municipality of Governador Valadares, allowed the sociability and approximation of the research team and the young interlocutors, as a commensality practice. The methodology adopted is qualitative of the theoretical-empirical type, using the case study technique, and the theoretical framework of Paula (2013), Dayrell (2016), Silva, Teixeira and Ferreira (2014), Ossucci (2008), Nieble. (2010) and Borges (2010). It appears that a diet consisting of nutrients, substances that perform important functions in the human body, is related not only to the nutritional aspects of the individual, but also to their emotional state, which is why knowing the relationship that young people establish with food is highlighted in this work. It is concluded that the coffee break is a possibility of creating bonds in a relationship of commensality and companionship between the actors involved in the research and university extension activities performed.

It is concluded that the coffee break is a possibility of creating bonds in a relationship of commensality and companionship between the actors involved in the research and university extension activities performed.
