Resumo: The objective of this text is to identify the knowledge and practice of health professionals and pregnant women regarding using medicinal plants during pregnancy. It is a descriptive, qualitative study in five units in the urban area with the highest demand for prenatal care and one unit in the rural area of a municipality in the interior of Northeast Brazil. The research sample, approved by the Ethics Committee, comprised 16 pregnant women and 18 health professionals: five physicians, five nurses, and eight community health workers. The analysis of the results was according to the methodology adopted by Bardin. As a result, pregnant women learned to use medical plants through lore, without formal guidance. Health professionals could not intervene or use this therapeutic modality. Training and guidance from professionals regarding the proper use of medicinal plants are needed to address the issue. This therapeutic practice allows innovation in the care and appreciation of popular knowledge, strengthening the bond between users and professionals.
