The representation of masculinity on Brazilian 1960s rock album covers

Resumo: | This paper aims to discuss how images in the covers of Brazilian rock albums from the 1960s mediated masculinity ideals, in a period in which gender definitions were suffering the impact of important sign reterritorializations. From theoretical-methodological assumption that culture is composed of cultural texts and codified in various sign systems, based on semiotics of culture we observe aspects of masculinity representations in the cover images with a focus on gender constructions. As result, we highlight continuities patterns of hegemonic masculinity in images and semantic discontinuities in representations. This reveals how historically marked masculinity ideals were inscribed in images and how new representations began to be used on the covers. |

Com base no pressuposto teóricometodológico de que a cultura é composta por textos culturais e é codificada em vários sistemas de signos, a partir da semiótica da cultura tentamos observar aspectos da representação da masculinidade nas imagens das capas com foco nas construções do gênero. Como resultados, destacamos continuidades de padrões da masculinidade hegemônica nas imagens e descontinuidades semânticas nas representações.
