Resumo: | The purpose of this paper is to problematize the dialogue between photography and chronicle in the construction of a new image of Porto Alegre in Máscara magazine in the context of the creation of cultural codes and modern urban modes of sociability that emerged in the 20’s. Illustrated magazines responded to a demand for visual representation associated with expectations of the city’s privileged social groups. Widening of the public sphere, social reorganization that follows the proclamation of the Republic, and its consolidation in the social imaginary gained publicity in the pages of these periodicals.
