Resumo: This study presents a panoramic view of the preservationist thought developed during the 20th century, having as methodological support the heritage letters produced between 1931 and 2000. Through them, we seek to identify the effects of international guidelines on the protection and management of heritage in Brazil, especially in urban areas. The parallel between the ambitious Brazilian preservation project and the accelerated urbanization of the country in the second half of the 20th century allows us to understand how the concepts were applied and the instruments suggested by the letters developed. It is possible to see that guidelines are present in Brazilian law, but the management instruments still require implementation effort in the name of urban conservation that can be effective.

Por meio delas buscamos identificar os reflexos das orientações internacionais sobre a proteção e gestão do patrimônio no Brasil, em especial dos conjuntos urbanos. O paralelo entre o ambicioso projeto de preservação brasileiro e a acelerada urbanização do país na 2º metade do século XX permite compreender como foram absorvidos os conceitos e desenvolvidos os instrumentos sugeridos pelas cartas.
