GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF TRANSIT ACCIDENTS IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF PETROLINA - PERNAMBUCO IN THE BRAZILIAN SEMIARID

Transport Geography can help municipalities develop data interpretation, which will serve as identifiers of accident points and help in the preparation of the municipalities' Master Plan. The objective of this research was to analyze the spatial pattern of traffic accidents in Petrolina-Pernambuco, in 2013, from January to September 2014. The methodological research has a qualitative and quantitative character and the operationalization of the study occurred in two stages: bibliographic review, data collection in cabinet; field and data processing, data being collected at the 4th Fire Brigade of Petrolina-Pernambuco, data organized in an Excel spreadsheet and construction of the Kernel map in Qgis. The results indicate that 726 occurrences (accidents) were attended to in 2013, resulting in a number of 713 injuries, varying in injuries (severe, medium and/or light), the data does not make it clear. Furthermore, 89 people were considered uninjured and 17 died that year. Eleven nuclei with five levels of variation were detected through the map. It shows the importance of the municipality needing studies on these high accident rates and, therefore, seeking alternatives together with public policies.
