This work develops the translation of Brazilian cultural terms and idiomatic expressions found in the character Chico Bento’s stories, seeking a practical and theoretical approach grounded in Venuti’s domestication theories (1995) and, primarily, in the theory of translational functionalism proposed by Christiane Nord (1991). The focus is on the analysis and commented translation of these cultural terms, considering the communicative perspective and the function performed by the translated text. The adopted methodology incorporates the principles of the translational functionalist theory, highlighting the translator's role in adapting the text to meet the expectations and standards of the target audience. The study aims not only to preserve cultural elements but also to ensure the relevance and acceptability of the translated text, establishing a more effective connection between the cultures of the source language and the target language. By exploring the nuances of translational functionalism and domestication, this work develops a reflective analysis of the challenges and choices faced by the translator in the translation of Brazilian cultural terms and idiomatic expressions in Chico Bento’s stories.
