Nursing care in mental health requires nurses to have different skills in order to produce the expected result. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to promote mental health care became evident. The creation of the Projeto Proteger-se allowed the academic community at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU) free access to multi-professional mental health care remotely. The present work aims to describe the experience I had as a scholarship extension worker for the project, during which I had the opportunity to deal with a variety of cases and expand my theoretical and practical knowledge about nursing care in mental health. Furthermore, I improved my teamwork and gained new skills working in project management. The relevance of extension in academic training is evident and projects such as Proteger-se prove to be an important space for learning and research, and for the democratizion of the access to mental health care.
