Introduction: This is the fifth of a series of six manuscripts about composite resins in the last 10 years. Composite resins were created with the aim of restoring damaged tooth structures, reestablishing the function and esthetics of smile. In spite of their excellent mechanical properties, when in the oral cavity, composite resins are submitted to different processes that may lead to reduction of the restorations longevity. The aim of this study was to synthesize and describe the main that favors the pigmentation and aging of composite resins and influence in their longevity. Methods: After extensive search in Medline/PubMed, using specific terms referring to each of the factors to be evaluated, 32 articles were included in this review. Data extraction and evaluation of the results were then performed. Results: All evaluated composite resins presented color alteration, with the red wine and coffee being the substances that showed the most potentials of pigmentation. On the other hand, and regardless of the test applied, all composite resins have undergone aging. Conclusion: Color changes due to the presence of pigments and aging are factors that influence the longevity of composite resin restorations. These factors must be properly considered and managed by the dentist in order to avoid long-term failure of composite resin restorations.
