Resumo: In Brazil, the number of special constructions in reinforced concrete that are obsolete is very large. The main reasons that make these constructions, mostly viaducts and road bridges, out of date, are the lack of inspection and maintenance of them, and the inability of these constructions to resist the increase in loads due to the new large vehicles existing. Among the available structural reinforcement methods, this work analyzes the use of external prestressing, the necessary requirements for its application, its performance as reinforcement through an application example and the approach of the content by the standards and the Brazilian literature.
