Resumo: This paper aims at discussing the Jesse Souza's theory of social classes. To do so, at first it presents a summary of his theory of modernity. Next, it approaches the main features by which Jesse Souza defines the "rabble", the "hard workers" and the upper classes - mainly the middle classes. Finally, it concludes by adding some critical comments that could contribute to the future development of the discussion about social classes in Brazil.
