Building bridges: the construction of popsicle sticks bridges in basic education as an incentive to access higher education

It is extremely important to encourage public school students to learn about and continue their studies in higher education, since many students, upon completing basic education, feel unmotivated or uncertain about continuing their education. Therefore, the extension project Construindo Pontes of the Federal University of Viçosa held a competition for popsicle stick bridges, together with the Viçosa city's municipal schools. Classes exposed basic points of the Civil Engineering and Architecture courses, along with guidelines for the construction of bridges. At the end of the competition, the bridge rupture ceremony was held, and possible causes of ruptures and ways to increase the efficiency of the bridges were discussed. It was possible to carry out the extension between the knowledge acquired in the Civil Engineering and Architecture courses with primary school students from Viçosa, enabling the exchange of knowledge and access to a new world of perspectives and opportunities.
