Resumo: | We identified and compared the environmental perception, knowledge about regional nature and practices of environmental education of teachers of elementary schools located in urban and rural areas of Diamantina, Minas Gerais. In general, teachers did not demonstrate perception of the interdependence between natural and social elements in the environment and recognize environmental education as a process of knowledge transmission. Most teachers conduct random activities of environmental education and do not know the importance of the regional nature, as well as the threats to it. They believe it is important to increase the frequency and the quality of environmental education activities, as well as to discuss the importance of the regional nature with the students, but mention the necessity to be trained for that. Overall, there were no marked differences between teachers from urban and rural schools, but it is recommended that teacher training activities take into account these different realities in its planning, in order to succeed. |

Em geral, os professores não demonstraram perceber a interdependência entre os elementos naturais e sociais no meio ambiente e conceituam Educação Ambiental como um processo de transmissão de conhecimento. A maioria realiza atividades de Educação Ambiental esporadicamente e desconhece aspectos relevantes da natureza regional e das ameaças que pairam sobre ela. De modo geral, os professores acreditam que seria adequado aumentar a frequência e a qualidade das atividades de Educação Ambiental bem como transmitir conhecimento e incentivar a valorização da natureza regional pelos alunos, e apontaram a necessidade de atualização/capacitação.
