Socio-ecological vulnerability in the occupied areas of municipalities of Caraguatatuba and São Sebastião, northern coast of São Paulo: measures and representations

This paper presents a temporal analysis of the vulnerability in the coastal region comprising the municipalities of Caraguatatuba and São Sebastião, based on the methodology to operationalize the concept of socio-ecological vulnerability presented by Anazawa (2012). The methodological approach updates and extends the characterization of the assets profiles of families or population groups to accommodate dimensions inherent to the places where they live. Thus, it becomes possible to observe and measure intra-urban differentials in vulnerability. The results demonstrate the heterogeneity in the vulnerability conditions among different regions of the municipalities through surface maps of the socio-ecological vulnerability index (SEVI)and its components for the years 1991 and 2000. In the observation panel, which helps to visualize the multiple dimensions of vulnerability, we demonstrate how graphic and tabular representations were able to show differences in the degree of families' access to each category of assets, avoiding simplified analyzes based on a synthetic index.
