Resumo: The opossum is an animal that has allowed the study of the ontogeny of different organs and systems and important physiological aspects, becoming the object of researches seeking solutions to issues related to human health. In this context, the study of anatomical descriptions of the stomach of the opossum Didelphis aurita, as well as their morphometric characteristics, is relevant to the morphophysiological information about this organ. Such information may be significant when compared with other mammals, with respect to anatomical and endocrine aspects related to histology and structure of the enteroendocrine cells observed throughout the stomach. For this study we used eight adult opossums captured in the Zona da Mata region of Minas Gerais, in the municipalities of Viçosa and Uba which data were obtained about the anatomy and histology of the stomach, and morphometry of the neuroendocrine components. Fragments were collected from cardic, fundic and pyloric regions, and transitions of esophageal and gastric pyloricduodenal. It was observed that the stomach of adult opossum presented average volumetric capacity of 0.201 ± 0.074 l, representing about 20% of body weight, given that it has a strong correlation with measurements anatomy, such as chest depth and crownrump length. The anatomical body measurements correlated with the measured organs, threads or the internal regions of the body may provide the parameters to be studied in animals, whose measurements are consistent with the desired correlation. Thus, it avoids euthanasia of animals that do not meet the morphometric requirements. The morphometric description of the stomach of the opossum D.aurita was performed focusing on mucous, submucous, muscle and serous tunics. The different types of glands found, as well as the different depths of the crypts and the different thickness of muscular layer define particular cardic, fundic and pyloric stomach regions. Grimelius and modified Masson-Fontana techniques were used for identification and quantification of argyrophilic and argentafins cells, respectively. Neurons of the autonomic nervous system, organized in submucosal and myoenteric ganglia, form the enteric nervous system (ENS) identified by the HE technique. Argyrophilic cells proved to be distributed in large quantities in all regions of the stomach, prevailing average 76.30 ± 5.00 cells/mm² in the pyloric region on other regions. Argentaffin cells had a higher average in the cardic region, which was 21.00 ± 3.71 cells/mm². The myoenteric ganglia were more numerous in relation to increasing submucosal and were distributed throughout the cardic, fundic and pyloric regions. Average was higher in the pyloric region, around 5.90 ± 0.73 ganglia/mm². The anatomical and morphometric study of the opossum Didelphis aurita stomach is relevant to know morphophysiology this organ. Such information may be significant when compared to other mammals in relation to anatomical and endocrinerelated histology and structure of endocrine cells observed throughout the stomach.
