Resumo: This epidemiological study aimed to evaluate the functional effect of a dietary supplement on nutritional status of elderly people by dietary and biochemical parameters. This is an epidemiological, prospective, analytical study, with institutionalized elderly residents in Ubá, Minas Gerais, during the period from January to April of 2010. To obtain the sample of the individuals who could be included in the study, were established exclusion criteria, and the final sample consisted of 35 subjects (17 males and 18 females). The food supplement was administered for 12 weeks. Dietary assessments were made in three periods (before, during and after supplementation), and assessments of biochemical parameters and measurement of physical activity through the use of pedometers in two periods (before and after supplementation). The blood pressure was measured and was also applied the questionnaire Mini nutricional Assessment, both performed before supplementation. Statistical analysis of repeated measures ANOVA, paired t test and Student t test, and their equivalent non-parametric were carried out. The results showed that the supply of the supplement significantly increased the intake of all nutrients that were in it and, for some nutrients, increased the percentage of individuals who are suited to their recommendations. Regarding biochemical parameters, we found that serum levels of hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), monocytes, platelets, serum iron, transferrin, bone alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, albumin, high density lipoprotein (HDL-c) and glucose levels varied significantly and positively between the two time points analyzed. Among the subjects who consumed below the median consumption of the supplement, only hemoglobin, MCH, MCHC, glucose and creatinine levels increased significantly. Since the dietary pattern has remained relatively the same and that the pattern of physical activity decreased among older men and did not vary among women, we conclude that the supply of nutrients provided by the supplement provided significant improvements in overall health of the elderly; emphasizing individuals with chronic diseases, since they related parameters such as glucose, HDL-c and prevalence of anemia, had significant improvement. Other studies are necessary in order to certify the effects of the supplement in question with its continuous and prolonged use.

Other studies are necessary in order to certify the effects of the supplement in question with its continuous and prolonged use.O presente estudo epidemiológico objetivou avaliar os efeitos de um suplemento alimentar sobre o estado nutricional de idosos por meio de parâmetros bioquímicos e dietéticos.
