Resumo: | This research compares the characteristics of the integrated and independent systems of pork production in Brazil, using multiple case studies, which focused on confined and complete-cycle producing units of swines. The study had as base the State of Santa Catarina (SC), Brazilian s greatest producer of swines, and presenting the predominance of integrated production system, and the region of the Vale do Piranga (MG), one of the main Brazilian regions of the independent production system.. The work compared the competitiveness of the two systems of pork production through the analysis of the performance of each system in different scenarios. It was used the costs and incomes structure (economic efficiency) of six producing pork farms, in which three belonged to one production system and three to the other. Inside each group, the farms were divided considering the scales of production. The Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the performance of each farm. The comparisons of the farms competitiveness were performed inside the same production scale group ,and across groups. Considering the whole datum horizon analyzed, it was observed that the integrated system of Santa Catarina presented greater internal efficiency, reflected by its lower production cost, in which the key-variable was the low transportation cost of the incomes to the pork farms. However, when the global efficiency of the system was considered, expressed by the economic efficiency of the farms, the independent production system of the Vale do Piranga (MG) was superior. The reason for this was the higher selling efficiency of the finished animals in the market, as the farmers get higher prices for the animals. Considering the comparison between the two production systems in different time periods, in prosperity time, the independent pork production farms presented higher returns. On the other hand, in period of crisis, the integrated production system farms were more successful in terms of performance, as the independent ones presented higher losses. Therefore, the research results corroborate the pork sector agents perception that the integrated system has a more stable situation in periods of high and low performance for the activity, when compared to the independent system. However, the independent system farms (Vale do Piranga (MG)) showed to be more competitive, considering the probability of getting positive economic results and maximum values of return, which reflects higher efficiency in managing the production process, and indicates its greater sustainability in the long-term period. |
