Resumo: This article seeks to analyze the process of integration of the Maranhão province with the imperial state. To this end, we will focus on the performance of the families of the provincial elite through the Presidency Council, an institution created for the new scope of regional power. By assisting the provincial president, appointed by the central power located in Rio de Janeiro, councilors ensured not only the maintenance of their privileges, properties and businesses, but also the restructuring of the new government along the monarchical-constitutional lines. However, there were many challenges. The minutes of the “Conselho Presidial do Maranhão” show that the project of state centralization had as one of its main foundations the elite families, who constantly sought to adapt to the “new times”.
