Resumo: The present paper discusses children's status in democratic contexts. The focus is on struggles for recognition and identity, looking through the lens of theories of recognition and sociology of childhood to explore how the subordinate place of children is constructed. This paper highlights debate about the possibility the equal dignity of children, the impossibility of validating their discourse and the current disrespect for established rights of children, indicating how expected behaviors of subjects from newborns to 12-year-olds have been framed as failures, resulting in the pathologization of aspects inherent to this stage of development.

Discusión sobre la posición de los niños en contextos democráticos a partir de luchas por el reconocimiento y la identidad, disparando a los autores de las teorías del reconocimiento y de la sociología de la infancia a comprender cómo se construye el lugar subalterno de la infancia. Se colocan destaques como la posibilidad de una vida con igual dignidad, la imposibilidad de validar sus discursos y el irrespeto a los derechos establecidos, asumiendo como defectos algunos comportamientos esperados para sujetos de 00 a 12 años, culminando en la patologización de aspectos inherentes a esta etapa de desarrollo. Discussão sobre a posição da criança nos contextos democráticos pautados em lutas por reconhecimento e identidade, acionando autores das teorias do reconhecimento e da sociologia da infância para compreender como se dá a construção do lugar subalterno da infância. Destaques como a possibilidade de vida com igual dignidade, impossibilidade de validação do discurso e desrespeito aos direitos estabelecidos estão colocados, indicando como comportamentos esperados para sujeitos de 00 a 12 anos vem sendo assumidos como falhas, culminando na patologização de aspectos inerentes a essa etapa do desenvolvimento.
