Resumo: This study deals with reflections about the internship carried out in the undergraduate course in Social Work in a city in the extreme south of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This internship had in its intervention project the partnership with the Sul Rio Grandense Association of Support to patients with sickle cell anemia- ASRAF. We used participatory research as a methodology, in addition to the field diary. Sickle cell disease is genetic and hereditary, and predominantly affects the black race, from the Popular Education in Health, a constant disrespect towards the bearer of this disease was noticed, and it is necessary to think together with the association strategies to cope with these noncompliances. ASRAF aims to prioritize special care for people with sickle cell disease, dialoguing with municipal entities for access to free medicines, tickets / transport, specialized care center, psychological, legal and assistance support. We believe that the experience of this internship in the area of ”‹”‹Social Work, made it possible to reflect on the role of the social worker in solving problems experienced, in this context, mainly by the black population. In addition, the social worker, working as a popular health educator, collaborates to educate citizens so that they begin to demand their rights and become aware of the strength they have when they start to mobilize collectively, acting as agents of the necessary social transformations.

A doença falciforme é genética e hereditária, e atinge predominantemente a raça negra.
