Resumo: This artkcle presents the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), its linguistic environment and a spelling system proposed by Claudio Alves Benassi, of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT). This writing is being provisionally called Visografia. It consists of only 62 characters divided into four visonetic groups which represent alphabetically and graphically the five parameters of this sign language (LS). The preparation of Visografia is justified by the fact that there are, in Brazil, three other sign language writing systems and none of them settled in the graphic registration of LS. Results show the feasibility of this system both in spelling and in reading of LS.

Results show the feasibility of this system both in spelling and in reading of LS.  Este trabalho apresenta um estudo feito por Claudio Alves Benassi, da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, sobre a Libras, seu meio linguístico e um sistema de grafia proposto por esse pesquisador. Ressaltamos que essa escrita está sendo chamada, provisoriamente, de Visografia. Esse sistema apresenta apenas 62 caracteres distribuídos em quatro grupos visonéticos que representam alfabética e graficamente os cinco parâmetros das Línguas de Sinais (LS). A elaboração da Visografia justifica-se pelo fato de existirem, no Brasil, três outros sistemas de escrita de língua de sinais e nenhum deles se fixarem no registro gráfico da LS.
