The possibilities for identifying and recognizing the cultural heritage of the city of Herval, based on the official historical documentation produced between the end of 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, has been the genesis of this study. It is part of the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of the municipality of Herval, Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil research project. The study focused on fourteen textual records published annually from 1899 to 1931 by the Municipal Council of Herval. The information in the documents was organized and gathered into four categories of analysis, such as Territorial and Building Property Taxes, Public Buildings and Constructions, Public Instruction, and Health. The narratives found in these documents made it possible to understand the main themes addressed and the forwarding of issues that guided the daily life of local administration in that period. With that, it was possible to observe the categories of Property Tax and Public Buildings and Constructions were the ones that presented the most expressive results for this study. The results found contributed to the identification and valuation of pieces that are part of the city’s cultural heritage, reflecting on decision-making aimed at guiding public policies that intend to safeguard the cultural heritage of Herval.
