Mediation in Teletandem during COVID-19 pandemic

Resumo: Teletandem is a telecollaborative language learning modality mediated by digital information and communication technologies, which promotes contact between Brazilian and foreign university students and the exchange of languages and cultures, being structured by two elements, interaction and mediation sessions. At Unesp Araraquara, it is usually held at the language laboratory. Due to the social distancing/isolation resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, Teletandem has been developed remotely, which resulted in changes mainly to the mediation session. This qualitative and interpretative study aimed to reflect on these changes, through data analysis of questionnaires and mediation sessions transcription. The results indicate that the WhatsApp tool was not effective for conducting mediation sessions, since the intersection of messages compromised the flow of conversations, not encouraging reflections on the questions posted by the mediators. On the other hand, mediation through Zoom was similar to face-to-face mediation and kept the elements that trigger reflection: sociointeractionism, metacognition and experiences sharing. Such findings can be used to (re)think about the organization and the Teletandem scope after the pandemic period.

Na Unesp Araraquara ele é realizado, habitualmente, no laboratório de idiomas. Devido ao distanciamento/isolamento social resultante da pandemia da Covid-19, o Teletandem passou a ocorrer de forma totalmente remota, o que trouxe mudanças principalmente à sessão de mediação. Este estudo, de natureza qualitativa e interpretativista, visou refletir acerca dessas mudanças ocorridas por meio da análise de dados provenientes de questionários e de transcrição das sessões de mediação. Os resultados indicam que a ferramenta WhatsApp não se mostrou eficaz para a condução das sessões de mediação, uma vez que o entrecruzamento de mensagens comprometeu o fluxo das conversas, não fomentando as reflexões sobre as questões colocadas pelas mediadoras. Em contrapartida, a mediação via Zoom assemelhou-se à mediação presencial e manteve os elementos desencadeadores de reflexão: sociointeracionismo, metacognição e compartilhamento de experiências.
