Families, associations and schools: tensions in the national identifications of migrant children

Resumo: In this article, I work on the identification processes of Bolivian children that live in the so-called “Bolivian neighborhood”, near the city of Escobar in the province of Buenos Aires. I focus on how this issue develops in family, community and school contexts. I report the alternation between rendering references towards “bolivianity” folkloric or invisible in two local schools. I focus on the dialectics of hiding and signaling as a way to live and define foreignness in a neighborhood crossed by a strong process of identity affirmation in a national context.

Atiendo cómo esta problemática se desarrolla en contextos familiares, comunitarios y escolares. Registro la alternancia entre folklorizar e invisibilizar las referencias a “lo boliviano” en las dos escuelas de la localidad. Me detengo en el significado de la dialéctica señalamiento-ocultamiento como una forma de marcar y vivir la extranjería en un barrio cruzado por un fuerte proceso de afirmación identitaria en clave nacional.Neste artigo trabalho sobre os processos de identificação de crianças bolivianas moradoras de um bairro conhecido como “El barrio boliviano” (o bairro boliviano) perto do município de Escobar na Província de Buenos Aires. Dou atenção a como se desenvolve a problemática em contextos familiares, comunitários e escolares. Registra-se a alternância entre folclorizar e invisibilizar as referências de “o boliviano” nas duas escolas da localidade.
