Resumo: The purpose of this research was to investigate theself-concept of adolescents from two family structures (parentswho live together and separated parents). The sample consistedof 120 adolescents with an average age of 1 5 years 5 months, livingin Brasilia. They were divided into two groups: 60 whoseparents live together and 60 whose parents are separated, 30males and 30 females. The self-concept evaluation was consideredaccording to the Self-Concept Factorial Scale (Tamayo,1981 a). The 2 x 2 ANOVA, which was calculated for each factor,showed main effects of the parents separation variable over thefollowing factors: personal assurance, social attitude, self-controland self ethic-moral, where the adolescents whose parentsare separated obtained significantly lower scores. The variable sex presented main effect only on the self ethic-moral factor, wherewomen obtained significantly higher scores.

A amostra foi composta por 120 adolescentes com idade média de 15 anos e 5 meses, residentes em Brasília. Os sujeitos foram divididos em dois grupos: 60 cujos genitores vivem juntos e 60 cujos genitores são separados, sendo 30 de cada sexo. A avaliação do autoconceito foi feita através da Escala Fatorial de Autoconceito ”” EFA - (Tamayo, 1981 a). A ANOVA 2 x 2, calculada para cada fator, revelou efeitos principais da variável separação dos pais sobre os fatores segurança pessoal, atitude social, autocontrole e self ético-moral, onde os adolescentes cujos genitores são separados tiveram escores significativamente mais baixos.
