Schooling and Abstraction Capacity:: A Study with the Brazilian Test of Proverbs

Resumo: This paper aims to evaluate the influence of the schooling on abstraction capacity. Such capacity was evaluatedthrough the Brazilian Test of Proverbs, that allows evaluation of thought concretude or abstraction as a funetion of the subjects'responses. Subjects were 61 male and female adults, aged 18 to 67 years old, divided in two groups: Group "A, low levei ofschooling, was attending night school 3a1 or 4th grades; and Group B, high levei of schooling, was attending 5th to 8th grades.The degree of dependence and the strength of association among the variables schooling, sex, age and the levei of abstraction,were evaluated by the chi-square test and the Tschuprow Coefficient (7). The results demonstrated that: (1) there were nodifferences between sex and age; (2) Group B subjects showed higher levei of abstraction, although the number of significantcorrelations among the variables was not high. The few significant correlations between abstraction capacity and schoolingmay be due to the little contrast between the two groups and to the fact that the proverbs were often used by subjects in theirspeech.

Esta foi avaliada através do Teste Brasileiro de Provérbios, que permite avaliar a concretude e abstração do pensamento em função do tipo de resposta emitida pelo sujeito. Participaram como sujeitos 61 adultos de ambos os sexos, entre 18 e 67 anos, de classe sócio-econômica baixa, divididos em dois grupos. O Grupo A - de menor escolaridade - cursava a 3a ou 4a série de uma escola noturna; o Grupo B - de maior escolaridade - freqüentava entre a 5a e 8a séries. Para avaliar o grau de dependência e a força de associação entre as variáveis escolaridade, sexo e idade dos sujeitos e o nível de abstração foram utilizados o qui-quadrado (% ) e o Coeficiente de Tschuprow (T). Foi verificado: (1) a inexistência de diferenças em relação ao sexo e à idade; (2) que sujeitos com maior escolaridade revelaram nível de abstração mais acentuado, porém o número de itens significantes não foi muito expressivo.
